“The Self does not move. The world moves in it.”
– Ramana Maharshi
Unless one has realized this, it is not an easy concept to grasp. It seems to be contrary to what we experience. From our present perspective it seems as if we are moving through the world. The world is ‘out there’ and we are in the world, separate from it.
But if you remain in a state of Presence, you experience a quite different phenomena. At a certain point, you realize that the phenomenal world springs forth, or is manifest from the present moment. And although the phenomenal world springs forth from the present moment, it rests within the present moment. The world ‘happens’ within the present moment. The present moment is unchanging, yet everything that springs forth from it is constantly changing. The present moment is one; it is Now. It seems like there are many moments throughout the day, yet in reality, there is only one moment – Now. It is always Now. Yet we experience a myriad of people, places, things, events, etc. throughout the day. These are all springing forth from the present moment. Contemplate this point. The present moment is constant, never changing, yet the world, which springs forth from the present moment, and rests within it, is constantly changing.
If you go deeper into Presence, another strange thing becomes apparent: You Are the present moment. The present moment and you are one. So the constantly changing world which springs forth from the present moment is also springing forth from you. You are the source of the world that you perceive. And so am I and so is everyone else. Each of us is the center and the source of creation, yet we are individuals.
And when you go deeper into Presence, you realize that you are Life. Life is all pervading. Life pervades the entire universe. And the entire universe resides within you. You are the center and the source of all of the universe, and you are also the peripheral. The universe emanates from you, and it rests within you. And it is the same for every life form, and everything is conscious. Every atom is conscious and is also the center and source of the universe. And the entire universe resides within every atom. The center of the universe is nonlocal; it is everywhere.
Now perceive yourself as all pervasive Life. The entire world emanates from you and rests within you. The world that you perceive as being ‘out there’ is actually you. You are the world. The world is moving through you.
Try an experiment: Drive in your car. You are sitting still, not moving. Yet the world moves by you at speed. From one perspective, you are perfectly still, but the world is moving. It is similar to that. The Self is unmoving, constant, never changing, yet the world is constantly moving and changing, just like the scenery while you are driving your car.
Have I lost you yet? Like I said, it is not an easy concept to grasp. I can only hint at it. Find out for yourself. Quiet your mind, rest in the present moment, and see what happens. Find out for yourself. Don’t believe what I am telling you. That is useless. Find out for yourself.
